Change Nameservers Without Website or Email Downtime

Copy every required DNS record, lower TTL in advance and verify the new zone before changing delegation.

Written by HostPora Academy Team · Technical review by HostPora Technical Review · Updated Nov 5, 2026

Step 1

Inventory the active zone

Record A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, CAA and service-specific records from the current authoritative provider.

  1. 1Export or copy zone
  2. 2Identify email records
  3. 3Record verification tokens
Step 2

Build the destination zone

Create the records at the new provider before delegation. Remove only entries confirmed as obsolete.

  1. 1Match hostnames
  2. 2Match record values
  3. 3Review TTL values
Step 3

Switch and monitor

Change nameservers at the registrar, then check delegation and important hostnames from independent resolvers. Keep the old zone available during transition.

  1. 1Check authoritative servers
  2. 2Test website and email
  3. 3Keep old provider active temporarily

Common questions

Resolve the details before changing production.

How early should I lower TTL?+

Lower it at least one previous TTL period before the planned record change.

Will email stop during a nameserver change?+

It should continue when the new zone contains correct MX and authentication records before delegation.

How long does a nameserver change take?+

Caching and registry updates vary. Monitor authoritative delegation instead of relying on one fixed time estimate.
